Course Description

The Hermeneia Bible Survey course offers a comprehensive and structured overview of the entire Bible, designed to equip learners with a clear understanding of the overarching storyline, theological themes, and literary composition of both the Old and New Testaments.

Rather than focusing on isolated passages or detailed verse-by-verse exegesis, this course provides a birds-eye view of Scripture—helping students see how each individual book contributes to the unified message of God’s redemptive plan.

Course Objectives:

  • To guide a personal reading of the whole Bible over ten months.

  • To state the basic content of each biblical book.

  • To interact with significant questions concerning each biblical book.

Course Assignments:

  • Read each biblical book quickly and carefully in accordance with the course schedule.

  • Write a 4-7 word chapter title for each biblical book. The goal of this assignment is to help the student fix the content of the chapter in their mind.

  • Attend each class, giving full attention and actively participating. The ESV will be referenced in class.

  • Write a 350-450 word summary of each biblical book.

  • Take two tests (1 on OT; 1 on NT) based on the Key Take Aways (distributed each class) for each book.

Course Texts:

  • An English Bible (The ESV Reader’s Bible is recommended, but not required) for personal Bible reading.

  • The MacArthur Study Bible (any translation) for book introduction notes.

  • Disciplines of a Godly Man by R. Kent Hughes for men or Disciplines of a Godly Woman by Barbara Hughes for women.

  • A Call to Prayer by J.C. Ryle
